Let \(S\) denote the set of functions \(f\) that are analytic and univalent in the open unit disk and satisfy \(f(0)=0\) and \(f'(0)=1\). For each \(f\in S\) let \(\{\gamma_ k\}\) \((k=1,2,\dots)\) denote the sequence defined by \[ \log\left[ {{f(z)} \over z}\right]= 2\sum_{k=1}^ \infty \gamma_ k z^ k \qquad (| z|<1).\tag{1} \] In [Acta Math. 154, 137-152 (1985; Zbl 0573.30014)], \textit{L. de Branges} proved that if \(f\in S\) then \[ \sum_{k=1}^ n k(n+1-k) |\gamma_ k|^ 2\leq \sum_{k=1}^ n {{n+1-k}\over k} \tag{2} \] for \(n=1,2,\dots\;\). If \(\{P(k)\}\) \((k=1,2,\dots)\) is nonnegative, nonincreasing and convex and \(P(k)=0\) for \(k\geq n+1\), then (2) is equivalent to \[ \sum_{k=1}^ n kP(k)| \gamma_ k|^ 2\leq \sum_{k=1}^ n {{P(k)} \over k}.\tag{3} \] Hence (3) holds where \(f\in S\) and \(\{\gamma_ k\}\) is defined by (1). The last fact is used in this paper to obtain results about the sequence \(\{\gamma_ k\}\). For example, it is shown that if \(f\in S\), \(0\leq r\leq 1/2\), then \[ \sum_{k=1}^ n k|\gamma_ k|^ 2 r^ k\leq \sum_{k=1}^ n {1\over k} r^ k \quad \text{for }n=1,2,\dots\;. \] Also for certain sequences \(\{P(k)\}\) which are nonnegative, nonincreasing and convex, but not necessarily equal to 0 eventually, a modified sequence \(\{\widehat {P}(k)\}\) is introduced which also has the property that \(\widehat{P}(k)=0\) for \(k\geq n+1\). By applying (3) to be the modified sequence this yields additional information about \(\{\gamma_ k\}\), where \(f\in S\). For example, it is proved that \(\sum_{k=1}^ \infty k| \gamma_ k|^ 2 r^ k\leq \log(1/1-r)\) for \(0\leq r<1\), and \(\sum_{k=1}^ \infty k^{1- \alpha} |\gamma_ k |^ 2\leq \sum_{k=1}^ \infty (1/k^{1+\alpha})\) for \(\alpha>0\).
