A finitely generated semigroup \(S\) is of \(I\)-type if there is a bijection from a free commutative semigroup \(\mathcal U\) to \(S\) inducing a commuting diagram between \(\mathcal U\) and the \(n\)-element subsets of \(S\) obtained from right translations acting on the generating sets of \(S\) and \(\mathcal U\). In [Invent. Math. 124, No. 1-3, 619-647 (1996; Zbl 0876.17010)], \textit{J. Tate} and the second author studied such semigroups while investigating the homological properties of Sklyanin algebras. The authors show that such semigroups are closely linked to Bieberbach groups, to solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation and to certain skew binomial polynomial rings. Among other results, they show that the twisted semigroup algebra associated with an \(I\)-type semigroup and a related cocycle is Noetherian, is Cohen-Macaulay, and satisfies the Auslander condition.
