The book presents an overview of optimisation-based methods and theories that are of relevance when handling transportation-related problems, as well as transportation-specific methods and algorithms. Chapter 1 provides an overview of mathematical programming problems and solution methods with specific reference to linear progmmming, convex programming, nondifferential optimisation, and some special problem classes including generalised linear programming, parametric programming, piecewise linear programming, linear-fractional programming, monotone function minimisation, quadratic programming, geometric programming, multimodal problems, separable function and block programming. Chapter 2 provides an overview of discrete optimization problems including integer programming, mixed-variable problems and problems on graphs. Chapter 3 presents specific transportation-oriented optimisation problems including various types and variants of routing problems, network flow problems, a number of methods for scheduling problems, and transportation problems. Chapter 4 presents general optimisation methods for problems under uncertainty including stochastic progmmming, game theory, multicriteria optimization, and fuzzy optimisation. Chapter 5 presents an overview of problems and methods for optimal control of lumped-pammeter and distributed-parameter systems, of discrete-time systems, and of systems described by differential inclusions. Chapter 6 presents special methods of strategic planning and operations management in transportation systems including business games, simulation modeling, program-goal planning, and expert estimates. Finally, Chapter 7 includes a mathematical background for the book.
