Let \(R\) be a subring of the ring \(S\), sharing the same identity. Then \(S\) is said to be a free finite normalizing extension of \(R\) if there is a finite subset \(B=\{a_1,\dots,a_n\}\) of \(S\) such that \(a_iR=Ra_i\) for each \(i\) and \(S\) is free as both a right and a left \(R\)-module with \(B\) as a basis. Moreover \(S\) is called an excellent extension, if, in addition, \(a_1=1\) and whenever \(N_S\) is a submodule of the \(S\)-module \(M\) such that \(N_R\) is a direct summand of the \(R\)-module \(M_R\) then \(N_S\) is a direct summand of \(M_S\). Recall that a ring \(R\) is said to be (right) Kasch if every simple right \(R\)-module is isomorphic to a simple right ideal of \(R\). The first main result of the paper under review shows that if \(S\) is an excellent extension of \(R\) then \(S\) is Kasch if and only if \(R\) is Kasch. Further recall that a ring \(R\) is said to be (finitely) pseudo-Frobenius, (F)PF for short, if every (finitely generated) faithful right \(R\)-module generates the category of all right \(R\)-modules. The second main result shows that if \(S\) is an excellent extension of \(R\) then \(S\) is PF if and only if \(R\) is PF. An example, due to \textit{D. Herbera} and \textit{P. Menal} [J. Algebra 122, No. 2, 425-438 (1989; Zbl 0674.16013)], is given to show that an excellent extension of an FPF ring need not be FPF. The author also gives an example to show that these results are not true in general if \(S\) is just a free finite normalizing extension. As a consequence of the results, it is shown that if \(R\) is graded by a finite group \(G\) with \(o(G)^{-1}\in R\) then the smash product \(R\# G\) is Kasch (PF) if and only if \(R\) is Kasch (PF).
