A reference model (RM) for an adaptive identification-based system adjusting the parameters of control algorithms is constructed. Two approaches are considered: (a) reducing the mathematical model of the underlying closed-loop system, and (b) structural changes of the closed-loop system. Qualitative characteristics of the iterative processes of parameter adjustments are obtained by computer calculations of various ``closed-loop system -- RM'' combinations. The conclusion of the author is: (i) the iterative processes are unstable either because of divergence of the procedure or because of Lyapunov instability of the system, (ii) nevertheless there are intervals where the system approaches the target output. Now, the problem is to construct a control algorithm such that the quality criterion holds in the indicated intervals.
