The author gives eight characterizations of infinite alternating and Lie type groups in terms of special sets of subgroups. We will give here the first result only. Let \(G\) be a group and \(H\) a subgroup. If \(K\) is a finite subgroup of \(G\) with \(K \leq N_ G(H)\) and \(K \cap H = 1\), then the author calls \(K\) an \(H\)-signalizer. Theorem 1.1. Let \(G\) be an infinite locally finite simple group. The following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(G\) is an alternating or Lie type group; (2) there exists a finite subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) such that \(C_ H(K) \neq 1\) for any \(H\)- signalizer \(K\) of \(G\); (3) there is a finite non-trivial subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) that centralizes all \(H\)-signalizers.
