The efficiency of long wave peristaltic transport of ideal and viscous fluids is investigated but, as distinct from earlier works, the efficiency is considered from the standpoint of the energy consumption of the external source (the ``generator'' of the peristaltic wave), and the ratio of the useful work done in pumping the fluid to the total work done by the generator creating the motion of the channel walls is determined.
