This paper is concerned with the problem of finding an integer \(N\) such that the pluricanonical map \(\varphi_{NK}\) is actually a birational one, where \(K\) is the canonical bundle of some 3-fold \(V\) of general type. In view of a result by \textit{J. Kollár} [cf. Ann. Math., II. Ser. 123, 11-42 (1986; Zbl 0598.14015) and 124, 171-202 (1986; Zbl 0605.14014)] one is reduced to study the case where \(V\) is regular, i.e. \(h^ 1(V, {\mathcal O}_ V) = 0\). Now let \({\mathcal H}^ 2 : = H^ 0 (V, \Omega^ 2_ V) \otimes_ \mathbb{C} {\mathcal O}_ V\) which is the subsheaf of \(\Omega^ 2_ V\) generated by global 2-forms. Complementing his previous study [Duke Math. J. 71, No. 3, 859-869 (1993)], the author focuses on the case where \(\text{rank} {\mathcal H}^ 2 = 2\). Let \(f : V \to \mathbb{P}_ m\) be the map defined by \({\mathcal E} : = \bigwedge^ 2 {\mathcal H}^ 2\). Then the author shows that \(\varphi_{27K}\) is indeed birational, provided \(\dim f(V) = 1\). Here by using results of Kollár (loc. cit.), it is enough to show that the plurigenera \(P_ 2 (V)>1\), in this situation. Also partial results are obtained in the cases where \(\dim f(V)>1\).
