Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p\) and let \(G\) be a finite group. We will introduce, for each normal subgroup \(H\) of \(G\), a partition of the irreducible \(k[G]\)-modules into classes we call \(H\)-cliques; this partition is a refinement of the partition of irreducible modules into blocks. Modules belong to the same \(H\)-clique if their restrictions to \(k[G]^ H\) share an irreducible submodule. Thus modules belong to the same \(G\)-clique if and only if they belong to the same block, and they belong to the same 1-clique if and only if they are isomorphic. We will develop a theory of cliques analogous to the theories of blocks and irreducible modules. In particular, if \(G\) is a \(p\)- solvable group with an abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroup, then there is a formula counting the number of \(H\)-cliques which is Alperin's conjecture when \(H = 1\) and Brauer's first main theorem when \(H = G\).
