It is shown that the convergence behavior of preconditioned Krylov sequences for finite element approximations to elliptic problems may be monitored in terms of quantities which are calculated as part of the iteration process. The theory is illustrated by computational examples, and they show the degredation of the standard finite element method with increasing cell Reynolds number.
