This paper describes an axiomatic approach to the notion of adjoint differential operators in the framework of the algebraic Lagrangian formalism. The author first recalls the notion of a right connection of order \(l\) and defines a dual structure of order \(l\) for a module over a commutative algebra over a commutative ring. He shows that the existence of a dual structure of order 1 is equivalent to the existence of a right connection of order one. Next, the example of flat right connections is discussed. The author proves that on a module equipped with a dual structure of order \(l\) adjoints of differential operators of order up to \(l\) can be defined. Also, the Green formula is valid in this case.
