\textit{B-Y. Chen} [Glasg. Math. J. 41, No. 1, 33--41 (1999; Zbl 0962.53015)] has established a sharp relationship between the Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature of submanifolds immersed in real space forms. He also proved an analogous result for totally real submanifolds of complex space forms [Arch. Math. 74, No. 2, 154--160 (2000; Zbl 1037.53041)]. In this paper, the authors obtain a sharp estimate of the Ricci tensor in terms of the squared mean curvature for slant submanifolds: A real \(n\)-dimensional submanifold \(M\), of a complex space form of constant holomorphic curvature \(4c\), is said to be a slant submanifold if for each vector \(X\) tangent to \(M\), the angle \(\theta\) between \(J(X)\) and \(T_{ p}M\) is constant, where \(J\) is the complex structure. It is proved that for such a submanifold we have \[ \text{Ric}(X)\leq \frac{n ^{2}}{4}\| H\| ^{2}+(n-1)c+3c\cos^ 2\theta, \] where \(X\) is a unit tangent vector. They analyze the particular cases in which \(M\) is a totally real or a complex submanifold. A Kählerian slant submanifold \(M\) is a proper slant submanifold for which the tangential component of the complex structure is parallel with respect to the Riemannian connection of \(M\). The authors show a similar inequality for the maximum Ricci curvature function, and prove that if the equality holds identically then \(M\) is a minimal submanifold
