Let \((W,S)\) be the Weyl group of type \(D_n\). Let \({\mathcal A}=\mathbb{Z}[u,u^{-1}]\) be the Laurent polynomial ring in an indeterminate \(u\) with integer coefficients. \textit{D. Kazhdan} and \textit{G. Lusztig} [in Invent. Math. 53, 165-184 (1979; Zbl 0499.20035)], introduced two \(\mathcal A\)-bases \(\{T_w\}_{w\in W}\) and \(\{C_w\}_{w\in W}\) for the Hecke algebra \(H\) associated to \(W\). In the paper under review, the authors introduce one more \(\mathcal A\)-basis \(\{Y_w\}_{w\in W}\) of \(H\), where \(Y_w=\sum_{y\leqslant w}u^{\ell(w)-\ell(y)}T_y\). It is usually a hard task to express the elements \(C_w\) in terms of the \(T_y\)'s explicitly since the computation of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials is very complicated. The authors express the \(C_w\)'s as \(\mathcal A\)-linear combinations of the \(Y_x\)'s for certain elements \(w\in W\). By these expressions of the \(C_w\)'s, one can easily deduce the expressions of the \(C_w\)'s in terms of the \(T_y\)'s, and also explicit expressions for certain Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for those elements \(w\in W\). Finally, starting with the elements \(w_J\) for certain \(J\subseteq S\), the authors find many distinguished involutions of \(W\) by applying the reviewer's method [\textit{J.-y. Shi}, Adv. Math. 81, No. 1, 66-89 (1990; Zbl 0760.20009)], where \(w_J\) is the longest element in the subgroup of \(W\) generated by \(J\).
