Using superdual or selfdual closed pointed cones \(K\) in Hilbert spaces, the author looks for conditions such that (nonlinear) complementarity problems are feasible. To this aim he considers successfully his concept of exceptional families of elements for a continuous mapping \(f\) [\textit{G. Isac, V. Bulavski} and \textit{V. Kalashnikov}, J. Global. Optim. 10, 207-225 (1997; Zbl 0880.90127)] and gets as main result for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces , that either the complementarity problem is feasible or there exists such an exceptional family of elements for \(f\) and \(K\). In general Hilbert spaces \(f\) must fullfil some more conditions. Some historical remarks enclosing variational inequalities are given too. The paper closes with explicitly given open problems to the topic dealt with.
