The main contribution of this paper is a ``real form'' of Kirwan's convexity theorem. The authors apply their result to flag varieties of a real semisimple group. As a result they obtain eigenvalue inequalities, which generalize inequalities found by previous authors. In particular, they find an answer to the following question: given the singular values of two rectangular matrices (of the same size), what are the possible singular values of their sum? To this end the authors study symplectic manifolds \(M\) equipped with an antisymplectic involution \(\tau\) and a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group \(W\).
