Let \(\{g_{na,mb}\}:= \{e^{2\pi imbx}g(x-na)\}_{m,n\in Z}\) be a Gabor frame for \(L^2(R)\). Then the frame operator \[ S: L^2(R)\to L^2(R), \quad Sf=\sum_{m,n}\langle f,g_{na,mb}\rangle g_{na,mb} \] is a well-defined, positive, self-adjoint and invertible operator. Classical frame theory says that \(\{(S^{-1/2}g)_{na,mb}\}\) is a tight normalized frame; here, the authors prove that among all functions \(h\) generating a tight normalized frame, the norm \(||g-h||\) is minimized exactly for \(h=S^{-1/2}g\). Versions of this result are presented in various domains, e.g., the time domain, the frequency domain, and the Zak transform domain. Furthermore, a method for fast numerical computation of \(S^{-1/2}g\) is proposed, and its efficiency is examined through numerical examples.
