The author considers optimal control problems of the type \[ \begin{gathered} I(y,u)= \int_\Omega g(x,y(x), u(x))\,dx\to\min,\\ u\in U,\quad y\in\mathring W^1_2(\Omega),\\ \sum^n_{i,j=1} {\partial\over\partial x_i} [a_{ij}(x) y_{x_j}(x)]+ f(x,y(x), u(x))= 0\quad\text{in }\Omega,\end{gathered} \] where \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) is a bounded \(C^{1,1}\) domain, \((a_{i,j}(\cdot))\) belongs to \(C(\overline\Omega)\) and is a positive definite matrix, and the functions \(f\) and \(g\) are measurable and continuously differentiable in \(y\). The author gives conditions that ensure the existence of classical optimal controls and that are more general than Cesari conditions.
