    We deal with solvability in the classical sense of the semilinear degenerate problem \[ (P)\quad D_ t(Mu(t))+Lu(t)=f(t,Ku(t)),\quad 0<t\leq \tau,\quad Mu(t)\to w_ 0 \] as \(t\to 0+\), where K,L,M are closed linear operators from Y into X, two complex Banach spaces, L is invertible with domain \({\mathcal D}(L)\subseteq {\mathcal D}(M)\cap {\mathcal D}(K).\) In Section 1 (P) is analyzed under the assumption that \(z=0\) is a simple pole of \(L(zL+M)^{-1}\) and \(f: [0,\tau]\times X\to X\) is a continuous function satisfying \[ \| f(t,u_ 1)-f(t,u_ 2);x\| \leq \] \[ a(t)C_ 1(\| u_ 1;x\|,\| u_ 2;x\|)\| u_ 1- u_ 2;x\|,\| f(t,u);x\| \leq b(t)C_ 2(\| u;x\|)\cdot (\| u;x\|) \] a(t),b(t)\({}_{t\to 0}\to 0\). A local solution for (P) is then ensured for any \(w_ 0\) in the range of \(ML^{-1}\). Utilizing the abstract potential operators technique developed by the first author [Math. Ann. 273, 17-44 (1985; Zbl 0573.34044)] in {\S} 2 the authors extend to the degenerate case the well-known result of \textit{A. Pazy}, Semigroups of linear operators and applications to partial differential equations [(1983; Zbl 0516.47023), p. 180] and Theorem 2.1 permits us to solve (P) under the assumptions that \(\| L(sM+L)^{- 1};{\mathcal L}(x)\| \leq 1\) for all \(s\geq 0\) or that \(\| L(zM+L)^{- 1}\); \({\mathcal L}(x)\|\) is bounded on Re \(z\geq 0\), x reflexive, and \(f(t,x)=Mg(t,x)\), \[ \| g(t,x_ 1)-g(t,x_ 2);\quad {\mathcal D}(L)\| \leq C(\| x_ 1;\quad {\mathcal D}(L)\|,\| x_ 2;\quad {\mathcal D}(L)\|)\cdot \| x_ 1-x_ 2;\quad {\mathcal D}(L)\|,\quad K\in {\mathcal L}({\mathcal D}(L)). \] {\S} 3 treats various concrete applications of the preceding results to some degenerate partial differential equations.
