Let G be a connected Lie group endowed with a bi-invariant pseudo- Riemannian metric Q and \(<, >=Q_ e\) the corresponding scalar product in the tangent Lie algebra g of G. The goal of the paper is to describe the group I(G) of all isometries of Q. This problem reduces essentially to that of describing the isotropy subgroup \(F(G)=I(G)_ e.\) The following results are obtained. If \([g,g]=g\) then the identity component \(F(G)^ 0\) is the group of all \(A\in Aut G\) such that \(dA_ e\) preserves \(<, >\). If, in addition, g/rad g is simple then F(G) is the group of automorphisms or antiautomorphisms \(\Phi\) of G such that \(d\Phi_ e\) preserves \(<, >\). If G is semisimple then \(I(G)^ 0\) coincides with the group of two-sided translations (this is well known if G is compact). The key tool is the concept of a pre-automorphism of g; this is an invertible linear operator of g preserving the triple product [, [, ]]. The author proves that \(A\mapsto dA_ e\) is an isomorphism of the group of local isometries of G leaving e fixed onto the group of all pre-automorphisms of g preserving \(<, >\).
