With \(X\) a nonempty set, a function \(C:X^2\to[0,1]\) fulfilling the properties \(C(x,x)=1\) and \(C(x,y)=C(y,x)\) for each \(x,y\in X\) is called a fuzzy symmetry; a mapping \(T:[0,1]^2\to[0,1]\) such that \(T(x,1)=x\) for each \(x=[0,1]\) and such that \(T\) is commutative, associative and non-decreasing is known as a triangular norm; the continuity of \(T\) can be ascertained from the natural topology of \([0,1]\) and \([0,1]^2\) as well. With a usual metric \(\rho\) on \(X\), with \(C\) as above and a left-continuous \(T\), the authors define the set \((\rho^* (a,b))_\alpha\), for \(a,b\in X\) and \(\alpha[0,1]\) in the following way: it consists of all those nonnegative real numbers \(x\) for which there are \(a_1,b_1, a_3,b_2\in X\) such that \(\rho(a_1,b_1)\geq x\), \(T(C(a,a_1)\), \(C(b,b_1))\geq\alpha\) and \(\rho(a_2,b_2)\geq x\), \(T(C(a,a_2)\), \(C(b,b_2))\geq\alpha\). The fuzzy set \(\widehat\rho(a,b)\) is defined as follows: \(\widehat\rho(a,b)(x)= \sup\{\alpha\in [0,1]\), \(x\in(\rho^*(a,b))_\alpha\}\), with the convention \(\sup\varphi=0\). The authors study the properties of \(\widehat \rho\) to justify its name fuzzy metric generated by \(\rho\) and \(C\), considering a triangular norm \(T\), and to study the topology generated naturally by \(\widehat\rho\).
