This is a rather substantial survey of the theory of Nash functions, which presents both the history and the recent developments. It treats the basic questions on separation, extension, Artin-Mazur description, idempotency and noetherianness in the Nash category. The authors discuss problems stated in specific situations, for example, Nash functions defined on real algebraic and Nash manifolds, as well as the most general formulations for Nash functions on real spectra of arbitrary commutative rings.
