The author draws attention to the unduly neglected figure Gabriel Koenigs (1858-1931), who responded to Gaston Darboux's call in the mid 1870s for more rigour in real-variable analysis by deploying uniform convergence as related subtleties ten years later in treating iterations of complex functions. The fuller context is presented in the author's excellent book ``A history of complex dynamics. From Schröder to Fatou and Julia''. Braunschweig: Vieweg (1994; Zbl 0788.30001).
