This paper studies the Koszul property of the homogeneous coordinate algebra of a smooth complex algebraic curve \(C\), in a projective space. The starting point is Petri's theorem, which asserts that, under certain conditions, the canonical algebra \(R\) of \(C\) is quadratic. The author restates such a theorem with a new technique, working in a more general situation, in which he is able to find sufficient conditions for the \(R_L\) algebra to be Koszul (where \(L\) is a very ample line bundle on \(C)\). The paper ends with the restatement of a geometrical bound for the regularity of a module over a commutative Koszul algebra.
