The administration of adaptively generated finite element meshes requires specific techniques and data structures. An appropriate data structure for triangular meshes is described. There are records of type pointrec, edgerec, trianglerec, etc. The essential feature is that the records include pointers to the other structures and to fathers and sons. Since the records are not supposed to be stored in arrays, procedures for running over all triangles, etc., are discussed. The structures are very useful when hierarchical bases multigrid codes are implemented.
