The dynamics of the linear coagulation equation \[ \begin{multlined}\partial_t f(t,V) = \int_0^V G(v) f(t,V-v) \left( (V-v)^{1/3} + v^{1/3} \right)^2\ dv \\ - \int_0^\infty \left( V^{1/3} + v^{1/3} \right)^2 G(v) f(t,V)\ dv \end{multlined} \] with initial condition $f(0)=f_0$ is investigated, when $G\in L^1(0,\infty)$ satisfies $0\le G(v) \le C_0 v^{-\sigma}$, $v>0$, and $v^\sigma G(v)\to 1$ as $v\to \infty$ for some $\sigma\in (5/3,2)$. The lower bound on $\sigma$ guarantees the finiteness of the second integral. The well-posedness of this equation in the space $\mathcal{M}_+([0,\infty])$ of non-negative Radon measures on $[0,\infty]$ is first established, using a semigroup approach. It is also shown that, if $f_0\{\infty\}=0$, then $f(t,\{\infty\})=0$ for all $t>0$ and $t^{\mu} f(t, t^\mu v) \rightharpoonup F(v)$ in $\mathcal{M}_+([0,\infty])$ as $t\to\infty$, where $\mu=1/(\sigma-5/3)$ and $(t,v)\mapsto t^{-\mu} F(v t^{-\mu})$ is the unique self-similar solution with unit mass to the coagulation equation with $G$ replaced by $G_\infty(v) = v^{-\sigma}$, $v>0$. Steps of the proofs include the construction of Markov semigroups associated to the linear coagulation equation with either $G$ or $G_\infty$, as well as establishing the existence and uniqueness of the self-similar profile with unit mass $F$.
