In this paper the authors study the structure of a ring \(R\) satisfying identities of the form \[f(x,y)=[F(x),y]^n-[x,F(y)]^n\] where \(F \) is an additive map defined on \(R\) and \(n\geq1\) is a fixed integer. This line of investigation is related to the concept of commuting maps: we recall the studies of Posner regarding commuting (centralizing) derivations on a prime ring. Many authors studied identities, satisfied by the elements of a suitable subset of a prime ring, that generalize the results of Posner, replacing derivations with generalized derivations and generalized skew derivations. In this paper, the authors consider the case in which \(f(x,y)\) is an identity for \(L\), a non-central Lie ideal of a prime ring \(R\), with characteristic different from 2, and \(F\) is a generalized skew derivation of \(R\). They prove that \(F(x)=\lambda x\), for any \(x\in R\), where \(\lambda\in C\) (the extended centroid of \(R\)), unless \(R\) is an order in a \(4\)-dimensional central simple algebra.
