Let \(F\) be the field with \(p\) elements where \(p\) is a prime, and let \(G\) and \(H\) be finite \(p\)-groups such that their group algebras \(FG\) and \(FH\) are isomorphic. Moreover, suppose that \(G\) is \(2\)-generated and of nilpotency class \(c \le 2\). The authors prove that \(G\) and \(H\) must be isomorphic. This establishes a special case of the modular isomorphism problem for groups of prime power order. The proof first shows that the isomorphism type of such a group \(G\) is determined by a certain \(5\)-tuple of integers, and then the authors show that this \(5\)-tuple can be computed from the group algebra \(FG\). \textit{Reviewer's remark:} It is now known that the modular isomorphism in general has a negative solution [\textit{D. García-Lucas} et al., J. Reine Angew. Math. 783, 269--274 (2022; Zbl 07503400)].
