\textit{H. Derksen} [J. Algebr. Comb. 30, No. 1, 43--86 (2009; Zbl 1231.05276)] introduced the \({\mathcal{G}} \)-invariant of a matroid which is a weaker matroid invariant than the configuration invariant introduced by \textit{J. N. Eberhardt} [Electron. J. Comb. 21, No. 3, Research Paper P3.47, 12 p. (2014; Zbl 1301.05056)]. The authors provide a construction to produce matroids with the same \({\mathcal{G}} \)-invariant but different configurations. Given a loopless matroid \(M\), the authors introduce the free \(m\)-cone \(Q_m(M)\), where \(m\) is a positive integer. Two loopless, nonisomorphic matroids \(M\) and \(N\) with the same \({\mathcal{G}} \)-invariant are shown to produce \(Q_m(M)\) and \(Q_m(N)\), which have the same \({\mathcal{G}} \)-invariant but different configurations. The authors study free \(m\)-cones thoroughly.
