One of the main goals of the paper is to introduce and study an infinite hierarchy of brackets whose simplest representative is the well-known Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket acting on the smooth vector fields on a smooth manifold. These higher-order brackets, named by the authors Haantjes brackets, are defined recursively and are labelled by a pair of linear operator fields acting on the smooth manifold. By choosing those two operator fields equal, the authors obtain a recursive procedure to construct an infinite family of tensor fields generalizing the Nijenhuis and Haantjes tensor fields (torsions). Another goal of the paper is to find the geometric interpretation of those torsions. The generalized Nijenhuis tensors have an important application in formulating a sufficient condition for the integrability of the distributions of the generalized eigenvectors of a broad classes of linear operators, thus providing a generalization of the Haantjes theorem for semi-simple operators. The paper could be of interest for a broad audience of differential geometers and mathematical physicists.
