A typical result obtained in this paper is the following: Let $K$ and $P$ be nontrivial cones in a real Banach space $E$, with $P\subset K$, $L_K^P(E)=\{L\in L(E): L(K)\subset P\}$, and $C_K^P(E)=\{L\in L_K^P(E): L\text{ is compact}\}$. Suppose that a completely continuous mapping $T:K\to K$ has an asymptotically linear minorant $h$ such that $h'(\infty)\in C_K^P(E)$ is lower bounded and that $T$ has a right differentiable at zero majorant $g:K\to K$ such that $g(0)=0$, $g'(0)\in C_K^P(E)$ is lower bounded and satisfying $\theta_P^{g'(0)}<1<\lambda_P^{h'(\infty)}$, where $\theta_P^L=\sup\{\theta>0: \text{there exists }u\in P\setminus\{0_E\}\text{ such that }Lu\succeq_K\theta u\}$ and $\lambda_P^L=\inf\{\lambda>0: \text{there exists }u\in P\setminus\{0_E\} \text{ such that }Lu\preceq_K\lambda u\}$. Then $T$ has at least one positive nontrivial fixed point. Several variants of this result are also proved. As an application, the existence of a positive solution of the third-order boundary value problem $$-u'''(t)+u'(t)=a(t)f(t,u(t)),\ 0<t<1;$$ $$u(0)=u'(0)=u'(1)=0,$$ is proved under certain assumptions.
