The authors study measures and densities (geometric measures) on differentiable stacks, equivalently, transverse measures on Lie groupoids. The authors have in mind that differentiable stacks can be represented by Morita equivalence classes of Lie groupoids. So, the stack associated to a Lie groupoid \({\mathscr G}\) over a manifold \(M\) represents the space of orbits \(M/{\mathscr G}\) of \({\mathscr G}\) which is, in general, very singular. The authors use then an appropiate generalization of Haefliger's approach to leaf spaces and to transverse measures for foliations. They prove Morita invariance, a Stokes formula which provides reinterpretations in terms of (Ruelle-Sullivan type) algebroid currents, and a Van Est isomorphism. In the case of proper Lie Groupoids, the authors reduce the theory to classical (Radon) measures on the underlying space, and they provide explicit (Weyl-type) formulas that clarify on Weinstein's notion of volumes of differentiable stacks. They also turn back to the notion of Haar systems (and the existence of cut-off functions).
