Let \(A\) and \(B\) be subspaces of an uncountable ordinal, \(X\) be a topological space and \(e(X)=\mathrm{sup}\{|D|:D\) is a closed discrete subset of \(X\}+\omega\) be the extent of \(X\). \textit{N. Kemoto} et al. [Topology Appl. 45, No. 3, 245--260 (1992; Zbl 0789.54006)] found a set-theoretic condition for the countable paracompactness of \(A\times B\). The authors of this paper were able to find a simpler condition than the one mentioned above. In their main Theorem 3.3 they prove that the countable paracompactness of \(A\times B\) is equivalent to the following: if a closed rectangle \(A'\times B'\) of \(A\times B\) contains a closed discrete subset of size \(\kappa\), where \(\kappa\) is a regular uncountable cardinal, then either \(A'\) or \(B'\) also contains a closed discrete subset of size \(\kappa\). Assuming that there is no weakly inaccessible cardinal, in their Corollary 4.2 the authors also show that \(A\times B\) is countably paracompact if and only if \(e(A'\times B')=e(A')+e(B')\) holds true for every closed rectangle \(A'\times B'\) of \(A\times B\).
