In this paper the authors present a general formulation of the averaging method for the semilinear equation \(Lx = \epsilon N(x, \epsilon)\), where \(L\) is a linear Fredholm mapping of index zero. Using such formulation, the authors present a partial answer to an open problem related to the Liebau phenomenon and derive the existence of multiple periodic solutions for a planar system with delay. Also the existence of solution for a nonlocal chemical reactor is obtained as a consequence of the previous study.
