The equations governing the nonlinear interaction of three resonant waves are studied under the assumptions that one wave is linearly unstable with the other two modes more heavily damped, and that the quadratic interactions are energy preserving. It is shown that the dynamics can be described in terms of a bimodal one-dimensional map, whose most significant feature is that its bimodal nature allows the possibility of two different stable orbits for the same parameter values. The influence on the system of a small amount of additive random noise is also considered.
