The aim of the paper under review is to study the weighted translation operators on the Schwartz space \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})\) from the point of view of linear dynamics. Weighted translation operators are the operators of the form \(T_w:f(\cdot)\mapsto w(\cdot)f(\cdot+1)\), where \(w:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{C}\) is a smooth function on \(\mathbb{R}\). The operator \(T_w\) is continuous on \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})\) if and only if \(w\) has moderate growth, i.e., each derivative of \(w\) grows at most polynomially). This study is motivated by the observation that composition operators on \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})\) are never hypercyclic (i.e., do not admit any function whose orbit under the action of the operator is dense in \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})\)). The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for \(T_w\) to be hypercyclic, chaotic, topologically mixing, etc. They show, in particular, that \(T_w\) is weakly topologically mixing if and only if it is hypercyclic, and chaotic if and only if it is topologically mixing. Many examples are provided.
