For an algebra \(A\) and its subset \(S\), let \(K\) be some congruence class on \(A^2\). By a class relation a binary relation \(R\) on \(S\) is meant which is of the form \(R=S^2\cap K\). The authors characterize varieties of algebras where every class relation is an equivalence relation (the so-called difunctionality) by means of a certain Maltsev condition which is a join of Maltsev conditions for egg-box property and direct decomposability of congruence classes.
