Let \(G\) be a finite group and \(N(G)\) the set of sizes of conjugacy classes of \(G\). It was conjectured by Thompson that if \(L\) is a non-abelian finite simple group and \(G\) is a finite group with trivial center such that \(N(G)=N(L)\), then \(G\cong L\). The author proves that this conjecture is true in the particular case when \(L\) is the alternating group of degree \(n\) if \(n > 1361\) and at least one of the numbers \(n\) or \(n-1\) is a sum of two primes.
