The authors derive explicit estimates for the Kolmogorov \(\varepsilon\)-entropy in \(H\) of the unit ball in \(V\), where \(H\) is a separable Hilbert space and \(V\) a dense, compactly embedded subspace of \(H\). It is assumed that the eigenvalues \(\lambda_j\), \(j\in\mathbb{N}\), of the inverse of the duality mapping \(A^{-1}\in\mathcal{L}(V';V)\subset \mathcal{L}(H;H)\) satisfy the growth assumption \(\lambda_j\geq cj^\alpha\), for some positive constants \(c\) and \(\alpha\). Subsequently, the results are applied to derive upper bounds for the fractal dimension in \(L^2(\Omega)\) of global attractors of semilinear parabolic problems in bounded domains \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\). The proof uses a general method to estimate the fractal dimension of invariant sets established in [\textit{S. Zelik}, ``The attractor for a nonlinear reaction-diffusion system with a supercritical nonlinearity and its dimension'', Rend. Accad. Naz. Sci. XL Mem. Mat. Appl. 24, No. 5, 1--25 (2000)].
