Consider a singularly perturbed boundary value problem \(\varepsilon\cdot u''+xb(x)u'-c(x,u)=0\), \(u(-1)=U_ -\) and \(u(+1)=U_ +\), with \(b(x)\geq b_ *>0\) and \(c(x,u)=xc_ 1(x,u)+\varepsilon c_ 2(x,u)\), where \(b\) and \(c_ i\) are of class \(C^ 2\). In 1990, \textit{R. Vulanović} [RAIRO, Modelisation Math. Anal. Numer. 24, No. 6, 765-783 (1990; Zbl 0716.65075)] compared asymptotically this problem with the pair of reduced problems \(b(x)u_ \pm'-c_ 1(x,u_ \pm)=0\), \(u_ \pm(\pm 1)=U_ \pm\) on condition that (C) \((xb(x))'+c_ u(x,u)\geq \delta>0\). Using the same method of discretization, improved by another \(L^ 1\) norm, the author shows that Vulanović's results remain true even if (C) fails to hold.
