The Charney-Davis conjecture was made in [\textit{R. Charney} and \textit{M. Davis}, Pac. J. Math. 171, No.~1, 117--137 (1995; Zbl 0865.53036)]. It states a linear inequality on the face numbers of odd-dimensional simplicial spheres that are also flag complexes. The paper under review proves this conjecture for the special class of sesquiconstructible spheres. This condition is recursively defined for unions \(U\cup V\) of simplicial complexes in terms of \(U,V,U\cap V\) and \(\partial(U\cap V)\). It is strictly weaker than shellability, and it is invariant under odd iterated stellar subdivisions.
