In a previous paper [Square condition and quasiconformality, Math. analysis and differential equations in : Interuniversity compendium of scientific works, Novosibirsk Univ. Press, 67--72 (1991)], the author of the paper under review introduced the following condition for a homeomorphism \(f:{\mathbb R}^2\to {\mathbb R}^2\), called the strong square condition, and which he denotes \(SSC(f,M)\): there exists a constant \(M>0\) such that for any square \(Q\) with sides parallel to the coordinate axes and for any pair \(E\), \(F\) of opposite sides of that square, the conformal capacity \(\text{Cap}(f(E),f(F))\) is \(\leq M\). In another paper [Sib. Adv. Math. 3, No. 4, 1--7 (1993; Zbl 0849.30015)], the author proved that a three-dimensional analogue of that condition ensures quasiconformality of a homeomorphism \(f:{\mathbb R}^3\to {\mathbb R}^3\). The same question for homeomorphisms of \({\mathbb R}^2\) is still open. In the paper under review, the author shows that any homeomorphism \(f:{\mathbb R}^2\to {\mathbb R}^2\) satisfying \(SSC(f,M)\) maps any straight line onto a quasiarc (i.e. a quasiconformal image of a straight line).
