\textit{C. Witzgall} [J. Res. Natl. Bur. Stand., Sect. B 69, 175--177 (1965; Zbl 0135.34403)] proved that any weak metric defined on a finite dimensional real vector space, for which distance up to (and from) any fixed point is convex, is necessarily derived from a gauge. This paper gives a new proof of this result using geometric arguments which also hold in the infinite dimensional case. In addition, some open questions are discussed at the end of the paper.
