Given a finite group \(G\), the slice filtration is an exhaustive filtration on the category of \(G\)-spectra, whose associated tower \(X \to P^* X\) refines the non-equivariant Postnikov tower. The slice filtration (for the cyclic group \(C_8\)) and its associated spectral sequence played a crucial role in the authors' solution of the Arf-Kervaire invariant problem [\textit{M. A. Hill} et al., Ann. Math. (2) 184, No. 1, 1--262 (2016; Zbl 1366.55007)]. In general, the slices of a \(G\)-spectrum \(X\) are hard to compute. Now let the group of equivariance be the cyclic \(p\)-group \(C_{p^n}\) for \(p\) an odd prime, though some results can be adapted to \(p=2\). The paper under review determines the slice filtration of \(S^V \wedge H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}\) for certain real representations \(V\), where \(S^V\) denotes the one-point compactification of \(V\). Here, \(H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}\) denotes the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum for the constant Mackey functor \(\underline{\mathbb{Z}}\). This paper complements work of Yarnall, who treated the case where \(V\) is a trivial representation [\textit{C. Yarnall}, Homology Homotopy Appl. 19, No. 1, 1--22 (2017; Zbl 1394.55007)]. Here are the main results. Let \(\lambda\) denote the \(1\)-dimensional complex representation defined by identifying \(C_{p^n}\) with the \(p^n\)th roots of unity in \(\mathbb{C}\). View \(\lambda\) as a \(2\)-dimensional real representation. The authors determine the slices of \(S^{\infty \lambda} \wedge H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}\), along with the maps in its slice filtration (Theorem 6.9). They also do this for \(S^{m \lambda} \wedge H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}\), for \(m \geq 0\). Its slice tower vanishes above \(2m\) (Theorem 7.1), agrees with the slice tower of \(S^{\infty \lambda} \wedge H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}\) below \(2m\) (Corollary 7.3), and the \(2m\)-slice is given in Theorem 7.4. The homotopy groups (viewed as Mackey functors) of the slices provide the input of the slice spectral sequence. For the slices found above, their homotopy Mackey functors are given by Bredon homology of representation spheres, which the authors compute explicitly (Theorem 5.7). Sample computations of the slice spectral sequence are also given.
