This paper concerns two-dimensional conservative systems with a non-degenerate center at the origin, so that a neighborhood of the origin, called the period annulus is foliated by closed orbits. Each periodic orbit has an associated energy and a period, so that the period can be considered a function of the energy, and for the values of the energy for which this period function has a critical point are, the associated period orbit is called a critical periodic orbit. If the system depends on parameters, then as these parameters vary critical orbits can bifurcate from the outer boundary of the period annulus. The problem treated in this paper is to bound the number of critical periodic orbits that can emerge at such a bifurcation point. The method for obtaining such bounds is based on embedding the derivative of the period function into a Chebyshev system. This work extends the results of previous studies in this direction [\textit{F. MaƱosas} et al., J. Dyn. Differ. Equations 30, No. 3, 883--909 (2018; Zbl 1444.34055); J. Differ. Equations 260, No. 6, 4918--4972 (2016; Zbl 1334.34076)].
