It is well known that a normalized Hecke eigenform of integral weight has algebraic Fourier coefficients, since the Hecke eigenvalues coincide with the coefficients. In the paper under review, a corresponding result for half-integral weight modular forms is established. Let \(f\) be such a cusp form of weight \(k/2\), level \(N\), character \(\chi\), and with Fourier coefficients \(a_f(n)\). The main result states: If \(a_f(n)\) is algebraic for \(1\leq n\leq B_k(n)={1\over 24} [\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}): \Gamma_0(N)]\), then \(a_f(n)\) is algebraic for all \(n\), and there is some number field to which they all belong. There is a similar criterion for \(f\) to belong to the Kohnen plus-subspace which is defined by the condition that \(a_f(n)= 0\) whenever \(n\equiv 0\) or \((-1)^{(k+1)/2}\pmod 4\): If this condition is satisfied for \(1\leq n\leq B_k(4N)\), then it is satisfied for all \(n\).
