The authors investigate a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) power system stability controller in order to provide an appropriate power compensation. It is argued that with a good designed controller, the dynamic active and reactive power conditioning between the SMES and the connected power system can be performed independently. Performance of the controller is investigated extensively by analysis and digital simulation. Test results show that the SMES modulated with a high-power electronic converter can be used to compensate the unbalanced power caused by disturbances in power systems. The robustness of the SMES based controller against power system operating condition is also verified by the experiments.
