The author considers the exponential sum \(S_f(p^m)\) where \(p\) is a prime, \(m\) is a natural number, \[ S_f(N)=\frac{1}{N^n}\sum_{x\in \{ 0,\dots ,N-1\}^n}\exp \left( 2\pi i\frac{f(x)}{N}\right), \] \(f\) is a polynomial over \(\mathbb Z\) in \(n\) variables. Under some non-degeneracy assumptions regarding \(f\), the author proves estimates of \(\left| S_f(p^m)\right| \) (uniform on \(p\) and \(m\)) conjectured by \textit{J.-I. Igusa} [Lectures on forms of higher degree. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Lectures on Mathematics and Physics. 59. Berlin etc.: Springer (1978; Zbl 0417.10015)] and by \textit{J. Denef} and \textit{S. Sperber} [Crabbé, Marcel (ed.) et al., A tribute to Maurice Boffa. Brussels: Belgian Mathematical Society, 55--63 (2002; Zbl 1046.11057)]. Earlier estimates of this type were proved in the above paper by Denef and Sperber for a more narrow class of polynomials \(f\).
