This important paper relates order types of chains in a modular algebraic lattice \(L\) to order types of chains in its semilattice \(K(L)\) of compact elements. The authors consider the class of order types such that any \(L\) does not contain a subchain of this type if and only if that applies to \(K(L)\) and, in addition, \(K(L)\) contains no subsemilattice isomorphic to the semillattice of finite subsets of a countably infinite set. This class is shown to include the order types of negative integers and of rationals (\(\eta\)). For the countable scattered (not containing \(\eta\)) indivisible (by partition into 2 subsets) order types a construction process is given.
