The authors develop the twistor theory of \(G\) structures for which the Lie algebra of the structure group contains an involution \(J\) instead of a complex structure (called \(G\) structures of para-twistor type, compare the results of \textit{D. V. Alekseevsky} and \textit{M. M. Graev} [J. Geom. Phys. 10, No.~3, 203--229 (1993; Zbl 0779.53020)]. The twistor space of such a \(G\) structure \(P\rightarrow M\) of para-twistor type is defined to be the total space of the bundle \(P/Z_G(J)\rightarrow M\) and is naturally endowed with a field of involutions \(\mathcal{J}\) and a \(\mathcal{J}\)-invariant distribution \(H\). The authors investigate the integrability conditions for \(\mathcal{J}\) and the (para-)holomorphicity conditions for \(H\). They apply their results to para-quaternionic Kähler manifolds: these admit two natural twistor spaces \(Z_{\pm} \) such that \(\mathcal{J}^2=\pm 1\). In both cases, \( \mathcal{J}\) turns out to be integrable (a result proved before by [\textit{D. E. Blair} and \textit{J. Davidov, O. Muškarov}, Rocky Mt. J. Math. 35, No. 5, 1437--1465 (2005; Zbl 1103.53025]) and \(H\) is (para-)holomorphic. They determine all solutions of the Einstein equation for the canonical one-parameter family of pseudo-Riemannian metrics on \(Z_{\pm} \). Finally, the authors prove that any Kähler or para-Kähler submanifold of a para-quaternionic Kähler manifold is minimal and describe all such submanifolds in terms of (para)-complex submanifolds of \(Z_{\pm} \).
