Let \(\mathfrak g\) be a simple complex classical Lie algebra and \(\varphi: {\mathfrak g} \to {\mathfrak {sl}}(V)\) an irreducible representation. If \({\mathfrak g}_ \sigma\) is a real form of \(\mathfrak g\) of inner type we have \(\varphi({\mathfrak g}_\sigma)\subseteq {\mathfrak {su}}(p,q)\), so the signature of \({\mathfrak g}_ \sigma\) is \(p-q\). The computation of the signature in case \({\mathfrak g}= {\mathfrak {so}}(2r+1)\) and \({\mathfrak g}_\sigma={\mathfrak {so}}_{r-k,r+k+1}\) for \(k=0, \dots r-2\) is treated in this paper. The signature is expressed in several cases by means of a formula which involves minors of certain matrices introduced by A. Hurwitz for the study of stability of linear differential equations. The minors can be computed in an easy way by applying Routh's algorithm.
